Software Engineer – Developer Experience / Tooling (Golang/PHP) (m/f/d)

You'll be working on tools like shopware-cli — the tool many of developers use every day to build, test, deploy, and operate on Shopware. It's the front door to our open-source ecosystem, and how it feels to use directly shapes how developers feel about Shopware itself.

If you're the kind of person who has opinions about how a CLI should behave — who's used gh, or any other CLI tool that made your life easier, and thought "this is how it should feel" — this role is for you. As a Software Engineer in the Developer Experience (DX) Tooling team, you'll work on the tooling and foundations developers use to build, extend, test, and operate Shopware. Your contributions directly shape how enjoyable, efficient, and reliable it is to develop on our platform.

This position can be filled on‑site, hybrid, or full‑remote within Germany or specific European countries where we are registered. Your work location will be agreed in advance and forms the basis of your employment contract. 

• Own end-to-end developer workflows — from local setup through CI/CD, deployment, and operations. Think containerization, cloud-native practices, GitOps, and the telemetry that tells us whether what we shipped actually works. Increasingly, that also means building tooling that's agentic-friendly: usable by AI agents and CI pipelines, not just humans in a terminal — and using AI tooling ourselves to build and maintain it faster.

• Build the foundations that power our open-source ecosystem — CLI, APIs, and the tooling around them.

• Hold code quality to a high bar — well-tested, well-architected, and built to be maintained, not just shipped. We care about conventions and tooling that keep that standard consistent as the team and codebase grow.

• Contribute to the open-source community — review contributions, improve documentation, and engage with developers using what you build.

• Bridge teams — work closely with core, SaaS/PaaS, documentation, and community teams to align tooling with real developer needs.

This is what you’ll bring to the table:

• Go experience is ideal — one of the tools we currently put a lot of focus on - shopware-cli, is Go-based, though our toolkit keeps evolving. You don't need to be a Go expert; what matters more is motivation and the ability to learn new technologies quickly. PHP knowledge, ideally with Symfony, is a strong plus — some of our tooling (like deployment helper) is PHP-based directly, and it'll also help you understand the broader Shopware ecosystem the CLI serves.

• Genuine curiosity about developer tools, paired with empathy for the people who use them — evidenced by things like: previous projects where DX was your main focus, side projects, contributions to CLIs or dev tooling (open source or otherwise), strong opinions about what makes a good developer workflow, or just being the person on your team who files an issue when something is mildly annoying.

• Hands-on experience improving Developer Experience through CLI tooling, automation, APIs, scaffolding, or workflow optimization.

• Comfort with automated testing and CI workflows, and an instinct for tooling that integrates smoothly into existing developer ecosystems.

• You actively use AI-assisted development workflows — coding, docs, automation — and are curious about where AI genuinely improves engineering efficiency versus where it doesn't. Terms like MCP or AI skills aren't foreign to you.

• Comfort working in the open: your code, PRs, and decisions are visible to a public community, and you're comfortable with that visibility, not just tolerant of it.

• Strong communication skills, especially in async communication, and the ability to collaborate with both internal stakeholders and external contributors.

• Excellent English, written and spoken. German is a plus, not a requirement.
