Senior Quality Engineer - Checkout & Payments (m/f/d)

Job description

Shopware is a leading ecommerce system that enables companies worldwide to scale quickly and efficiently in digital commerce. As a trendsetting open source solution, Shopware is already used by some of the largest European brands, retailers and manufacturers in the B2C and B2B industries.

As Senior Quality Engineer - Checkout & Payments, you will help make payment journeys reliable across Shopware, Shopware Payments and external systems. Your primary focus will be hands-on integration testing, automation and release validation: checking that a shopper can complete a purchase, that the order and payment states are correct, and that failures and retries are handled safely.

You will join Quality Operations within Delivery Excellence and work alongside the Checkout & Payments engineers, Product Management and other quality engineers. You will contribute early to feature planning, turn product risks into executable tests, investigate failures and provide clear quality-readiness recommendations. This is a senior engineering, IC position. You will build on the existing acceptance-test framework and CI infrastructure rather than create a separate testing organization.

These are your tasks:

  • Define and deliver risk-based coverage. Work with Product and Engineering to identify critical merchant and shopper journeys, existing coverage, and gaps. Agree a focused testing scope for each increment and follow it through implementation, review and validation.

  • Build and maintain automated tests. Use TypeScript, Playwright, and API/integration testing to validate behavior across the storefront, Shopware, the Payments service, and payment-provider interfaces. Choose the appropriate test level rather than putting every check into a browser test.

  • Validate payment outcomes, not only UI behavior. Check order creation, payment state, amounts, and currency. Extend coverage to relevant cancellation, capture, refund, webhook, and recovery scenarios according to product risk.

  • Assess integration failure modes with developers. Test authentication, merchant isolation, repeated requests, idempotency, and asynchronous state changes where relevant. Make sure failures do not produce duplicate payments or inconsistent orders.

  • Make test results useful in delivery. Integrate and maintain product tests in CI with Engineering and Product Operations. Improve test data, repeatability, and diagnostics; distinguish product defects, provider or environment problems, and flaky tests.

  • Support release and compatibility validation. Validate relevant release artifacts, upgrades, and supported configurations within the existing release process. Turn incident findings into regression coverage and practical improvements.

  • Communicate a clear QA recommendation. Explain the tested scope, results, remaining risks, blockers, and next actions to Product and Engineering. Raise priority conflicts early and track findings to a result, agreed handover, or explicit decision.

  • Share ownership and knowledge. Review test code, pair with colleagues, and improve reusable fixtures and documentation. Work with other quality engineers so coverage can be maintained and supported by more than one person.

This is what you’ll bring to the table:

  • Experience delivering and maintaining automated tests for production software, including API/integration and end-to-end testing.

  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript or JavaScript and practical experience with Playwright or a comparable framework. You can work confidently in a Playwright-based codebase.

  • Experience with CI pipelines, Git, code reviews, reproducible test environments, and debugging using logs, traces, and application code.

  • An understanding of HTTP APIs, authentication, asynchronous processing, and state transitions, including how to test failure and retry behavior.

  • The ability to turn an uncertain product requirement into testable scenarios, prioritize by risk, and deliver a useful increment while seeking support where needed.

  • Collaborative attitude, you’re a team-worker by nature, and you love expanding your curiosity every day by learning from others, and coaching others with your own experience.

  • Clear written and spoken English and experience working directly with developers and product colleagues on quality risks and release decisions. German is not required.

Helpful, but Not Essential

Experience with payment providers, e-commerce, or financial transaction flows would be useful, as would PHP/Symfony, Shopware, OpenAPI-based contract testing, containerized environments, or multi-tenant services. Experience using AI-assisted development and testing tools is welcome when combined with independent review and verification of the results.

We welcome different career paths and perspectives. You do not need experience in every area listed to apply. Prior Shopware or PayPal experience is not required.

What Success Looks Like

Your initial priorities will be agreed during onboarding with Product, Engineering and the quality-engineering team. They will include:

  • A maintained view of critical Payments journeys, current coverage and the highest-priority gaps, with clear implementation responsibilities.

  • An initial purchase/payment journey running reliably in CI or an agreed release gate, verifying the order and payment outcome and providing useful failure evidence.

  • Risk-based coverage for subsequent integration and New Checkout increments, with clear QA recommendations, documented limitations and shared responsibility for maintaining the tests.

Progress will be assessed through working coverage, test reliability and useful release decisions, rather than test counts or documentation volume alone.

This is what we offer you:

  • Company Culture: Open culture with flat hierarchies, where individual initiative is encouraged.

  • Employment Contracts: Permanent positions that offer long-term security.

  • Flexibility: Flexible working hours and options for mobile work and full-remote contracts.

  • Equipment: Freedom to choose your preferred work hardware.

  • Onboarding: Well-structured onboarding with support from a personal "buddy."

  • Work Environment: An inspiring environment with dedicated colleagues and a dynamic community.

  • Development Opportunities: Diverse opportunities for personal growth and development.

  • Additional Benefits: Attractive perks such as company pension plans, health programs, and regular team events.
